Qué es lo que pretendo proteger: que el proyecto siga por la senda de
"no ánimo de lucro". Es lo que pretende la GPL, y lo que no pretenden
BSD y PD.

Te voy a poner otro caso más ajustado a nuestra realidad: Wine
y me dices a ver qué opinas

In the beginning, Wine adopted a BSD-style license. At the end of 1999
discussion began about changing the license. Richard Stallman had
pointed out that it was incompatible with the GPL which potentially
causes problems with any open source project wishing to use Wine code.
Most developers didn't see a need to craft a new license and the X11
license, a derivative of the BSD license, had the most support. A vote
was called for and in January of 2000 Alexandre announced that it
would become the new license of Wine.
In March of 2002 a poll was conducted among both the free and
commercial developers of Wine to see if there was interest in moving
to a different license. __Most developers did not want their code to
be appropriated by a commercial entity__ and there were concerns that
might happen. After much debate they chose the Lesser General Public
License and on March 9th, 2002 the Wine source code became bound to
those terms. The LGPL, often referred to as a "copyleft" license,
required the Wine developers to abide by some guidelines

basémonos en la hipótesis de que nos surje una lapa, o una traición
dentro del core de desarrolladores que arrastra a la mitad para montar
una empresa (la misma, con ánimo de lucro), o una multinacional que
decide poner un montón de capital para "reaprovechar todo ese código"
y hacer negocio.

Legalmente no te lo puedes sacar de encima, y es un pulso muy molesto.

Tendremos el programa bueno, pero el suyo será mejor (sobretodo en la
GUI), porque reutilizan lo bueno y lo hacen todavía más user-friendly
para el usuario común, con lo cual se llevan la cuota de mercado y te
dejan en minoría.

por no hablar de la cabronada que sufren los developers, trabajas
gratis para que otro se lucre con tu código y "sus modificaciones
privativas".
